A 41 year old man in Detroit, Michigan is charged for causing a death while texting and driving on the road. The driver was driving about 55-60 mph and evidence show that he was texting prior to the collision. The driver was texting and did not stop at a stop sign causing him to crash into a 78 year old passenger killing her while her husband, the driver survived with multiple injuries. The man is sentenced to one year in jail and a $1000 for the misdemeanor. Many people do not believe this is the proper punishment for the tragic accident but authorities says that their hands are tied because the man was not drunk, speeding or performing any reckless driving. Law makers are still considering and reviewing penalties to establish a rightful punishment.

We all know that texting and driving is one of the best ways of distracting an individual when behind the wheel. So why do people still do it recklessly? First of all it completely takes your eyes off the road and distracts your vision. Then it requires you to take your hands off the wheel. And finally it takes your mind off of driving which is very important but doesn’t seem to matter to the minds of texting maniacs. Studies show that texting and driving is responsible for roughly 16,000 deaths within a 6 year period. Studies also shown and proven that texting and driving is 3 to 4 times more dangerous than one who is under the influence. No state bans all cell phone use in cars but is banning certain drivers.

Xeng Lee - “I don’t think banning it will make a difference people will still do it."
Xeng Lee - “I feel like one year is not enough. I mean he took a life of a love one and that can never be replaced. He should be sentenced longer so that people will see the consequences and stop texting and driving.”
